Blockchain, IoT and Smart Glasses at DES 2017

The second edition of DES – Digital Business World Congress (DES2017), the largest international meeting place for digital transformation, closed last week, having reached the figure of 18,000 participants. The event took place in Madrid from 23 to 25 May in the IFEMA exhibition centre: Konica Minolta has managed a booth and some presentations about the research and innovation activities developed in our lab and in Business Innovation Centre.

Our colleague Zdenek Vrbka, Incubation and Business Development Manager at BIC Europe, has taken part in the roundtable about “Supply Chain Optimization”. Zdenek has highlighted the importance of going digital to achieve higher level of efficiency. Indeed many companies have digitalization projects running with goal to reduce or eliminate the paper in their processes: they are implementing AI, sensors, machine learning, big data to improve the supply chain – but one of the biggest assets are the human workers. We failed to deliver them digital tool yet. They still use paper in most cases or other devices that block their hands. Currently available smart glasses do not meet industrial requirements since they are too heavy, they have short battery life, and a reduced view. This is why Konica Minolta has invested in smart glasses for Industry 4.0 and we have developed Wearable Communicator. BIC team is currently testing the glasses on the European market with selected customers and pilot projects in production environment will be realized in Europe before the end of 2017.

Among the other topics discussed within the course of DES 2017, it is worth mentioning Blockchain, with a presentation from Alex Tapscott, co-author of “Blockchain Revolution: How the technology behind Bitcoin is changing money, business and the world”. He has described  the theory of how Blockchain will lead to a new landscape of development in areas as diverse as health, education, government and public administration, finance and business.

Representing our research laboratory, I had the chance to take part in the exhibition to demonstrate some of our research activities with a focus on Smart Room Booking System and  Distributed Robotic Network.
